Let's First Understand What Makes Older Fur Babies Different

Most prospective Pet Parents go to the orphanage (shelter or rescue) not knowing anything about adopting a Fur Baby (i.e. financial or emotional commitment, medical issues, etc) much less a “senior” Fur Baby,

Why do prospective Pet Parents think adopting a “senior” Fur Baby is a no no? A lot of people think that adopting an older Fur Baby means it will die sooner, have more medical issues, not being able to play like a young puppy or kitten, this is not necessarily so.

Just as with older humans, we need to remember they have so many Life experiences that the younger humans don’t have. These Life experiences are valuable. Just like the older Fur Babies who already know some right from wrong, are settled and better behaved. Think about adopting an older Fur Baby.

Many prospective pet parents jump to conclusions about older Fur Babies like more medical issues, less playtime, and a swiftly approaching death date. There are so many benefits to adopting an older Fur Baby that are often overlooked. From coming prepotty trained to having laid back demeanors,  here are a few perks to keep in mind when you visit the Fur Baby orphanage:

Teaching Seniors Is Much Easier!

Puppies and kittens can require lots of time and effort when training. However, many seasoned seniors arrive at their new homes already trained and housebroken. They’ve had years of experience working out what is acceptable behavior, making adjustments quicker and easier when entering your household. This means fewer accidents and less stress during the adaptation period.

Still Considering Adopting a Puppy or Kitten?

Potty training a Puppy or Kitten takes a lot of time and patience. Having a Puppy or Kitten is like having a newborn you just brought home from the hospital (except you don’t have to 3 AM feedings). You have to teach them right from wrong, give them boundaries, have lots of patience because you choose to adopt a baby and you can not leave them alone for long because they are a baby!  Will you be answering “Yes” to the questions below?

🐾 Do you have this tolerance?

🐾 Do you have the patience and commitment for this?

🐾 Do you have the time for this? Will your schedule allow you to fully be there for this Puppy or Kitten?

Before adopting a Fur Baby, it’s vital to the health of the Fur Baby that you ask yourself questions like the above. You have to be able to picture yourself, and commit to teaching the Fur Baby things like learning to sit, stay, potty training. You’ll also need to make sure that you’re well trained on how to remain calm when inevitable situations happen like accidents inside the house or chewed up shoes.

No Matter the Age, Adopting a Fur Baby is a Huge Lifestyle Change

Remember whether you adopt a younger or an older Fur Baby, your life and lifestyle will change furever. When adopting a Fur Baby, your schedule will include coming home at a certain time to walk them, feed them and give them play time. When they are young, they require a lot of your schedule. This also means making sure they are uncrated during the day. They need be able to walk around for the eight to ten hours you are at work. If you haven’t prepared yourself for the lifestyle change that comes with adding a Fur Baby to your family, by enrolling in our Pet Care Basics 101 Courses.

They Have Great Personalities

One undeniable benefit of welcoming an older Fur Baby into your Life is that they already have well-established temperaments. Unlike young Fur  Babies whose personalities and behavior may still develop, older Fur Babies are what they appear to be—calm, docile, energetic, shy—but always ready to shower Love upon their furever families.

Even if your Fur Baby has some anxiety or trauma, it is possible to teach an older Dog new tricks – or in this case, new love languages. There is a poem that was written by Dorothy Law Nolte, “Children Learn What They Live”  While this poem was written references two legged children, it’s message is in excellent summation of what it means to raise a Fur Baby responsibly.

In the case of an older Fur Baby, you don’t know what baggage they come with. Just like in a human relationship, when you give unconditional love (love that has no expectations in return) to an older Fur Baby, you have the chance to re-instill Trust in that Fur Baby as well as to show them they are now safe

When you are these exceptional Pet Parents. it’s a win-win! You get to do your magic, which not everyone is capable of and the Fur Baby now has Pet Parents who makes them safe and secure.

By showering a neglected older Fur Baby with Love, you are creating the possibility to prolong their Life even if they have some medical issues.

You Know What to Expect

While health issues vary among older Fur Babies, there are some potential advantages worth mentioning. Firstly, with an older Fur Baby, you won’t receive any unexpected surprises regarding size or health since their physical development has stabilized. Secondly, they often require less exercise compared to younger Fur Babies, perfectly fitting into families who prefer slow strolls or spending cozy evenings at home instead of high-intensity activities.

Statistics Indicate That a Notable Proportion of Fur Babies May Experience Long Term Medical Issues During Their Lifetime

Studies have shown that a significant number of Fur Babies do develop long-term medical issues over their lifespan. For example, according to the Banfield Pet Hospital’s 2020 State of Pet Health Report, approximately 31% of Dogs suffer from dental disease, 28% are overweight or obese, and about 32% have arthritis.

Additionally, a study published in the Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine estimated that around 46% of Cats aged 6 years or older had some form of chronic kidney disease. Another study found that around 20% of senior Dogs (over 8 years old) were affected by heart disease.

These statistics indicate that a notable proportion of Fur Babies may experience long term medical issues during their lifetime. However, it is important to note that these numbers are approximate and can vary depending on several factors.

This means that even if you adopt a bright-eyed Puppy or Kitten, you’re likely to run into health complications down the road that you won’t be sure of until they happen. When adopting an older Fur Baby, you’ll already know what to expect when it comes to medical expenses. This foresight can help you make a responsible financial decision when adopting a Fur Baby. Either take a gamble or settle into a healthcare regimen that’s been working for an older Fur Baby.

Reduced Destructive Behaviors

Say goodbye to chewing curtains or scratching up furniture! Older Fur Babies have generally passed this phase in life, leaving behind destructive behaviors associated with teething and excessive energy levels. Instead, they provide calm companionship, relieving you of worries over your furniture and allowing for a more relaxed living environment.

Instant Bonding

While bonding with any Fur Baby takes time and patience, adopting an older Fur Baby can sometimes bring about quicker connections. Many seniors have already experienced loss or abandonment but still have so much love to give. Match up this unconditional care from their side with your own loving commitment, and the bond between you two will deepen rapidly, creating a beautiful harmony that only comes with second chances.

We all Deserve a Second Chance

So, if you’re open to sharing your life with a four-legged friend looking for a second chance, consider giving an older Fur Baby the loving home they deserve. Not only do you gain a loyal companion who knows how to return affection in heaps, but you also provide them with a happy ending they’ve been waiting far too long to experience. The greatest advantage is the joy found in knowing you made a positive difference by providing comfort, happiness, and security – indeed, a gift both yourselves and your Fur Babies will cherish. ❤️🐾
