The concrete is at least 105° and black asphalt is at least 130°. If it is 90° the concrete is at least 125°and the asphalt us at least 140°. At 95° the concrete is 140° and the asphalt is 155°.

The above graphics shows you what happens at 85° Remember this will be painful.

The next graphic is an example of how hot the concrete and asphalt become on a 90°F day. Notice that the concrete heats to 125°F and the asphalt heats to 140°F.

The temperature concrete and asphalt climbs to during 95°F air temperature.

The Only Reason Concrete is Less Hot (if You Can Call it That) is Due to the Fact That it is Lighter in Color. The Asphalt is Black and Just Like a Black Car, Dark Colors Absorb the Heat More

When you are a responsible and educated Pet Parent, you will do this test first before taking your Fur Baby out for their walk. Put your hand on the concrete or asphalt and leave it there for thirty seconds (time this with your phone or watch, as most people have no perception how long thirty seconds is). When you are unable to keep your hand on the concrete or asphalt for thirty seconds, then it is too hot for your Fur Baby. Remember to multiply it by 4, as it’s 4 paws that will be in pain and unlike with your hand, their paws have to be on the hot ground!

In a Short Period of Time, Your Fur Baby’s Paws Will Start to Blister

When the surface is at 125°F, burnt paws can happen in 60 seconds (one minute) and even faster when hotter. You might think it’s not that hot because you don’t feel it.* Are you barefoot or do you have shoes on?

Remember, when the surface is at 125°F, burnt paws can happen in 60 seconds and even faster when hotter. That would mean that asphalt is too hot to walk on for your dog on an 85°F day. *

Here Are the Symptoms of a Damaged Paw From Hot Surfaces:

  • Walking with a limp, or a tender walk
  • Not wanting to walk and the person pulls them on the leash anyway
  • A darker than normal pad on their paws
  • Licking or biting at their feet
  • Blisters or Redness on their paws
  • Missing parts from their pad

Hot Weather is Hard on Dogs From Their Feet to Their Body Temperature

Plenty of water (add ice cubes to keep it cool) and cool conditions will keep them happy.

Just remember because of carelessness on the part of the irresponsible Pet Parent, this can cost you dearly at the doctor.

When your Fur Baby needs medical attention because of burnt or injured paws, be sure to be vigilant and go to the doctor’s office immediately.

Should You Ever See Someone Walking Down the Street and it’s Over 80° in Air Temperature,

please dial 911 so the police can show up and help the Fur Baby. (Never confront the person yourself, it’s not safe.) When you wait and do nothing, the Fur Baby will continue to suffer. Their pads on their paws might be bleeding, burnt and/or both and in need of medical attention. (Just remember the street or ground they walk on is quite dirty, so infections can set in quickly.) Save the Precious Fur Baby’s  life.
